A Podiatrist is a specialist of the foot, ankle and lower limb.  Sports Podiatrists (or musculoskeletal Podiatrists) primarily focus on the way the foot interacts with the ground and try to consider the loads or forces that the lower limb has to contend with during high impact sporting activity.  This is often also referred to as 'biomechanics' which is esentially the application of mechanical principles to living organisms.

Anyone is able to contact a Sports Podiatrist directly to arrange a consultation, or alternatively be referred by another health professional such as their GP, Osteopath, Physiotherapist or Consultant.  Often the best outcome with regard to returning to sport following a lower limb injury involves podiatric input combined with other rehabilitation strategies.

 Sports Podiatry may include:

Movement analysis to identify potential risk factors for future injury

Video gait analysis to assess lower limb kinematics

Joint mobilisations or sports taping

Evaluation of current athletic footwear and its suitability for chosen sport or individual foot type

Injury diagnosis and implementation of an appropriate management plan

Provision of foot orthoses to reduce damaging forces within injured tissues

Recommendation of diagnostic imaging including X-RaysMRIs or CT scans

Onward referral to other specialists for further investigations
